Skin Care Products: Botox

Most people wouldn’t consider eating food that has been infected with clostridium botulinum, otherwise known as botulism. However, thousands of people have undergone a procedure in which the bacteria is injected beneath the skin of their face. Scientists have discovered that in small, diluted amounts, the same result that makes the bacteria so dangerous for consumption –the serious complication of paralysis—can actually hold benefits in treating fine lines and wrinkles.

About Botox

In large amounts, the bacteria otherwise known as botulism can be potentially fatal. However, when injected into the areas surrounding fine lines and wrinkles, the bacteria can cause a weakening of the muscles that control those lines and wrinkles. Scientists have found this to be very beneficial in treating people with uncontrollable blinking or a lazy eye. However, botox has more recently been used to treat wrinkles, creases –including eyebrow creases—frown lines, and crow’s feet.

The injection blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles surrounding the wrinkles or lines, causing them to soften. This can relieve the appearance of wrinkles and lines for several weeks. Yet, the treatment will not work for wrinkles caused by sun damage or gravity, as this has caused the actual elastin in the skin to break down and cause the sagging. The procedure is usually complete in a few minutes and doesn’t require anesthesia. Patients may only experience minor discomfort. It usually takes about three to seven days for the treatment’s full effect to take place, and the procedure’s results last for about four to six months. Side effects can include temporary bruising and headaches that usually resolve within 24 to 48 hours. In other cases, eyelid drooping may occur. Don’t rub the skin around the injection site for 12 hours after the procedure to avoid migrating the bacteria, and do not lie down for three to four hours after the procedure.

Over time, the procedure can actually lessen the appearance of wrinkles and lines even after the treatment has worn off as the muscles are being trained into their new positions. Botox should be considered only after a consultation with a qualified healthcare professional.
